Congress OKs 'Cash for Clunkers'

WASHINGTON -- Last-minute intervention from the White House on Thursday swayed a crucial Democratic senator to rescue a $1 billion "cash for clunkers" plan to boost battered auto sales. The full bill ... cleared the Senate on a 91-5 vote and was sent to the White House for Obama's signature, likely next week. The program, which is expected to go into effect in late July or early August, would give consumers cash incentives to trade in gas guzzlers for new models with higher fuel efficiency. The program "will boost consumer confidence, get the economy going again and reduce our dependence on foreign oil," said John McEleney, [chairman] of the National Auto Dealers Association.

Chevrolet Accolades and Awards Update

The editors of Truck Trend Magazine has announced its 2009 Best In Class Full-Size SUV Winner: Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon

They write: "Times are changing, and along with them, so is the full-size SUV. The manufacturers' dilemma is now how to keep the capability of the big sport/utilities while improving efficiency. GM has done it with the Tahoe (and Yukon). It's one thing to convert a truck to a car-based platform to improve mpg; GM has gone to great pains to keep the Tahoe capable of holding nine people and towing more than 8000 pounds, all while getting 20 mpg (21 with XFE models). At close second is the Sequoia, with a class-leading 10,000-pound towing capacity."

Consumer Reports names Chevrolet Avalanche as their top pick for the pickup segment.

Consumer Reports has selected the Chevrolet Avalanche full-size sport utility truck as its Top Pick honoree among all 2009 pickups. Top Picks are the best all-around vehicles in their categories and must meet CR's road test, reliability and safety requirements.
"The Chevrolet Avalanche full-sized crew cab ($36,000 to $47,000) is one of the most versatile and comfortable pickups that Consumer Reports has tested," according to the magazine. "Its unified bed and cab helps give it a solid feel and a comfortable, quiet ride. Its innovative partition, between the cab and the bed, can be folded to allow longer cargo to extend into the back of the cab." The Avalanche was the only domestic vehicle chosen in the 10 categories that make up CR's Top Picks.
